Quitting smoking may be the single most difficult decision of a smoker’s life. Vaping helps to bridge the gap from smoking to quitting for good. Did you know new regulations are coming that directly impact the vaping industry?

Our Government is looking to quietly impose a nicotine cap on vaping products. This means that Health Canada is proposing to establish a maximum nicotine concentration of 20 mg/mL for vaping products manufactured or imported for sale in Canada. This will limit the nicotine concentration available to Canadian vapers and push vapers back to smoking. The official consultation period runs until March 4, 2021. For heavy smokers who rely on vaping to stay off cigarettes, this means they are not getting the nicotine levels required to keep them from returning to smoking cigarettes.

Even if you are a non-smoker, it is likely you know someone who has suffered the ill effects of smoking cigarettes. It is also likely you know someone who vapes to stop smoking cigarettes. Although vaping is not safe, it is safer than smoking cigarettes, and is only intended for existing smokers to use as a cessation tool. By capping nicotine levels, we are taking a successful harm reducing and effective smoking cessation tool out of the picture for smokers.

Rights 4 Vapers is a movement dedicated to advancing evidence-based regulations on vaping. They are a group of committed volunteers who believe that vapers deserve to make an informed choice. But it doesn’t stop at nicotine caps. Flavours will be next. Minister Hadju is not focused on helping the adult smokers in becoming or staying smoke free. A CBC report on the nicotine cap regulations states: "Health Canada is also considering restricting flavours in vaping products and making the industry give more information about their products, including details on sales, ingredients and research and development.” December 18, 2020.
